MAY 10, 2010 ORLANDO, Fla., May 9 (UPI) -- Florida gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink probably won't be invited back as commencement speaker after getting the University of Central Florida's name wrong. Graduates interrupted her address with boos and groans Saturday afternoon after Sink, a Democrat, called the University of Central Florida -- "USF" -- at least twice during her remarks. USF are initials of the University of South Florida, which is in Tampa, while Sink was speaking at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, the Orlando Sentinel reported. She is Florida's chief financial officer. I wonder how she does with numbers.
MAY 9, 2010 From AP: CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez is tops on Twitter in Venezuela less than 2 weeks after launching his account, surpassing Internet-savvy foes who dominate the social networking site and use it to oppose him. Chavez's account, "chavezcandanga," had racked up more than 237,000 followers as of Saturday morning — besting the 234,000 who receive tweets from Globovision, the only TV channel that remains critical of the socialist leader. Story goes on to point out that many of the messages Chavez receives are critical.
MAY 8, 2010 (Reuters) - Officials at Nepal's state-run airline have sacrificed two goats to appease Akash Bhairab, the Hindu sky god, following technical problems with one of its Boeing 757 aircraft, the carrier said Tuesday. In some parts of the world they call this the "new technology."
MAY 7, 2010 BOCA RATON, Fla., May 6 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old Florida girl was arrested after she allegedly stole a car at a gas station pump, and ordered the 12-year-old girl inside to get out, police said. Who said our kids aren't as advanced as kids of other nations? Why, they're right up there, sharpening their career skills at an early age.
MAY 6, 2010 MILAN (Reuters Life!) - Italy is holding its first divorce fair, offering services such as life coaching and beauty advice to a booming number of separating couples in the Catholic country. Next up: America will hold a "trying to get away with it" fair, featuring John Edwards and Tiger Woods.
MAY 5, 2010 PARIS, May 4 (UPI) -- A group of French lawmakers wants to repeal an "obsolete" law banning women from wearing trousers while outdoors in Paris. The 10 members of the French parliament suggesting the "obsolete" law, introduced by the city's police chief in 1799, be "de-legislated" said it is already trumped by 1946 legislation making men and women equal under the French constitution, The (London) Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday. Same old story. The French take so long to address a major crisis.
MAY 4, 2010 COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Police in Columbus are looking for a man they say robbed a bank near downtown, then handed two $100 bills to passers-by as he ran away. FBI Special Agent Harry Trombitas said the man robbed a Huntington Bank branch early Monday afternoon after showing a teller a gun in his waistband. Trombitas said the man was running up the street when he encountered a mother and daughter window-shopping. Sounds like the kind of guy who should be working for the Obama administration.
